Bikini, o intero? Brasiliana o slip? Vita alta o vita bassa?

Insomma tutto diventa possibile!

Bikini or one-piece? Brazilian-cut or normal bottoms? High or low waist? Admit it, my dear pinelle, we women make even our choice of swimming costume complicated! The trends of each new season, the many styles, fabrics and shapes that are on the market nowadays certainly don’t help! We saw it in yesterday’s post… we are really spoilt for choice! But have you ever wondered how the swimming costume has changed over the years?

From the “swimming suits” of the late 19th century to the first knee-length costumes of the 1920s, right up to the bare legs of the ‘30s. Centimetres were gradually pared away and leg lengths rose, but we were still light years away from today’s fashions! The first bikini, similar to present day ones, arrived only in 1946, and that was a real revolution!

The fifties heralded the Pin-up girls with their generous figures. Swimming costumes adhered to their curves, supporting them and making them oh-so sexy! The sixties introduced yet another new style, the monokini, a costume made up of just bottoms with top exposed, conceived by the Austrian-born American designer Rudi Gernreich. The beginning of the sexual revolution.

The late ’70s and ’80s saw the triumph of the high leg bikini with miniscule triangle top!

The ’90s, instead, brought back the one-piece costume, which was undoubtedly due to the popular TV series Baywatch and its alluring, and moreover voluptuous, stars! High-cut leg, of course, and very, very tight – a winning combination to accentuate the cleavage!

And so we are back to the present-day, where the number one rule is: “there are no rules, let your imagination run wild! Swimming costumes are now mix and match, in shape, colour and fabric, offering one-pieces, trikinis, bikinis and much more…. In short, everything is possible!
